And the Oscar goes to… usually a character with a psychological disease. Portraying a person who experiences the world differently can be challenging, but extremely rewarding at the same time.

Holding a medical degree and an MA in Psychology, I practised in the field of psychotherapy for many years before turning to my real passion: filmmaking. In this tutorial, I offer a more in-depth insight into the world of mental illnesses. Whether your protagonist suffers from a condition or everyone around them is affected by it, you have to find exciting ways to authentically show their personalities. Film history is full of stereotypical portrayals of these disorders, so going deeper into this world is well worth the journey.
